The 2011 Burra Classic

Luke Davison (Jayco2XU) took the spoils in the 2011 Burra Classic.

Riders in the 91st Edition of “The Burra”, set off in overcast and chilly conditions. A strong Westerly Breeze meant that this year’s race would go to the advantage of only the strong riders. And so it proved.

As expected, the Scratch Markers were pulling back time on the handicaps given to all the riders that started in front of them. The middle and front bunches would do well just to keep their groups together, with the prevailing side winds on the way to Mt Bryan and back.

It was when the race headed in an easterly direction, that the riders picked up a tailwind, which together with some downhill sections had riders sitting on speeds in the mid 60kph range. The Scratch riders were reportedly averaging well in the 70kph range!

Heading down to Robertstown, young Daniel Symons put in a “lion hearted” effort, riding away from the other limit co-markers, to pick up some of the preme sprints on offer along the way.

Whilst behind him, the chase was on in earnest from the surviving riders of the 22min & 27 min marks groups. Strong rides were being put in by last week’s Milang winner Ollie Marold, the evergreen Peter Grivell, Andy Van Arend and Ben Plush, finding some form after his recent overseas travels.

This group was holding their own against the chasing riders from the 17min group. The return from Robertstown saw young Symons finally get caught, but the side wind was causing some problems for the group, as they struggled to keep a rhythm. Still they had an advantage of 2&1/2 mins at the 25km mark.

But the scratch riders then swept through the remaining riders of the middle bunches, making contact with the leaders at the end of aptly named Worlds End Rd.

The turn onto the Morgan Rd then saw a flurry of attacks, which meant the top placings for this years race, would go to the scratch markers. The win and fastest time going to Luke Davison, followed by Scott McPhee and a smart move from Cam Bayly (5&1/2 mins), taking 3rd.

The winner Luke Davidson from Sydney also took out the title of fastest time. Scott McPhee (CDCC) was second, but was right on Luke’s tail.
